For a “hidden” spline, cut a groove in the pieces perpendicular to the miter's face. The closer you can keep the groove to the inside corner, the deeper the groove can be. For ¾″ material, a 1/8″ groove (a regular saw kerf) will be fine. For thicker material, you may want to increase the width of the groove to ¼″ or more.

For a 45° miter you can run the pieces flat on the saw table, guided by the miter gauge. Use the rip fence to help keep the grooves placed consistently. For compound miter cuts, the only way to keep the groove perpendicular to the miter face is to run the pieces past the blade vertically. Attach the pieces to the tenoning jig to keep the groove placement consistent and to protect the fragile tip of the miter.
